So today in my Sociology of Poverty class we watched a documentary about poverty in rural Mexico. The men who live here often illegally immigrate to the United States to earn money to support their family because their own government is corrupt and won’t help them.
No, not just men. Many of those who migrate seeking to save their families are women. Maybe they are brave like your own mother, who I’m sure would do anything necessary to feed you. Or maybe your mother would not?
These Mexicans think that the United States should be the ones to help them.
“These Mexicans”? Did you poll them? Are you a mindreader? Or perhaps you are simply bouncing back the conservative and racist thinking of the day: that “These Mexicans” are freeloaders who want a hand out? Clearly, if a person travels hundreds of miles, risks death, rape, and other horrors, just so they can WORK for a living, they don’t think anyone should help them. They just want a fair chance to help themselves, now that USA treaties like NAFTA and CAFTA have decimated the agricultural industry in their own countries.
I do not. Although I am an Anarchist, I think that while we have a government here in the U.S., illegal immigration is just as it says: “illegal”.
Oh…you are an “Anarchist” who relies on a government to bolster your (racist) ideologies. How neat.
It should not be the responsibility of the United States to help everyone around the world with their problems when we can’t even fix the problems within our own country.
It is the responsibility of the USA because it was the USA that invaded Mexico, stole California (a massive source of gold that helped make this country what it is today), relies on cheap labor so that people like you have produce on your table; it is the USA companies’ that advertises in Spanish for workers in Mexico as well as go to many other lengths to secure workers from Mexico , and it is the USA that has helped destroy the ability of Mexicans to earn a living in Mexico in the first place.
So anyways, these people come here, take advantage of our ‘wonderful’ programs, don’t give anything back to this country and then leave.
Don’t give back anything? How about taxes? How about 11 billion in taxes they they never get back? You’ve got the tally sheet backward, dearest.
Also, before 9/11 there was an unwritten arrangement. During seasons when the US needed crops harvested, migrants would travel up for the season, work in fields, and then go back. This was a mutually beneficial system. We got our crops picked, and they got to earn some money. Then, the government decided to go to war on “Terror” (create a security industry) and the borders became militarized. This keeps workers here, sending money back home, instead of migrating with the seasons. See how this works?
I don’t feel bad for them at all.

Sure they are poor, but there are poor Americans I should care more about.

So as I am voicing my opinion on how I am totally against immigration of this sort, this bitch next to me is all like “but they do pay taxes when they buy clothes and stuff so they do help us!” Sorry hun, but no. These people don’t pay any sort of income tax because they get paid under the table.
Wrong. They pay sales tax on everything they buy. Just like you and me. (Actually, I don’t because I live in Oregon, and we don’t have sales tax.) And they pay income tax, too. Billions of it.
And sales tax on the minuscule amount of clothes they buy is not enough to repay what they take. Towards the end of class this girl says to herself (but obviously loud enough for me to hear because I’m sitting a foot away from her) “this country was founded by illegal immigration”.
This is how I felt when she said that:
Oh really? Illegal how? Because there was some sort government here before European settlers came and declared immigration from other countries without proper documentation against the law? What law?

Also, I just had to re-blog this because the OP has actually left me dumbfounded. I’m not necessarily surprised, just… speechless. Then again, I haven’t been out of the house for a while.
